Cable and wire extruder saves $24,000 in just six months using Dyna-Purge® M.

Cortland Cable Company, based in Cortland, NY, is ISO certified, specializing in the manufacturing of cable and wire.

Using only 1 lb. of Dyna-Purge M, Cortland was able to remove a semi-conductive material, which was a cause of electrical sparking, contamination and excessive waste.

SITUATION:
Cortland Cable, the company with "New Technologies for New Frontiers," designs and manufactures electro-mechanical cable and synthetic rope solutions for applications on, under, and out of this world. Serving niche markets in the oil and gas, aerospace, defense, medical, oceanographic and other industries, Cortland has nearly 150,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing space.

The company operates Entwistle and Davis Standard wire and cable extruders and runs a variety of resins including, PU, PP, PE and Nylon at temperatures ranging from 350° F to 460° F (176° C to 238° C). Cortland’s production engineer states that after running semi-conductive cable, they would experience electrical sparking and contamination in the next production run, amounting to over 400,000 linear feet of "failed" and wasted cable.

SOLUTION:
After running a series of purging trials, Cortland selected Dyna-Purge M as the most effective purging compound for removing semi-conductive material. Using on average only 1 lb. of Dyna-Purge M, Cortland was able to remove all of the contamination and successfully transition to the next production run. Dyna-Purge M can be used to purge a variety of resins out of the barrel and screw at processing temperatures ranging from 350° F to 600° F (177° C to 315° C).

RESULTS:
Saved $24,000 in scrap during a six month period.
Lowered cost-to-purge to $36.42.
Used only 1 lb. of Dyna-Purge M per purge.
Required just 25 minutes to complete purge and transition to next production run.
Gained 192 production hours.
