Polymer Engineering Company Ltd. lowered its cost to purge by 75% after switching to Dyna-Purge engineered purging compounds. Previously, the company would run PE resin and then disassemble its Brabender extrusion machine to clean the components manually.
(1.) Shows formulated resin before purging.
(2.) The introduction of Dyna-Purge F thermoplastic purging compound.
In addition to time and material savings from using Dyna-Purge, Polymer Engineering Company Ltd. is able to conduct extrusion runs without processing interruptions such as disassembly.
(3.) Dyna-Purge cleaning quickly and thoroughly on the first pass.
(4.) Running PE after successfully using Dyna-Purge.

Situation:
Polymer Engineering Company Ltd., Burnaby, British Columbia provides research, analysis and product development services for the plastics, rubber, and adhesives industries. The company operates a Brabender Plasticorder with a 3/4" screw and 4" cast die. The applications include plastic and rubber compounding extrusion, cast and blown films, rods and rubber profiles. A wide range of resins are processed at various temperatures depending upon the experiment being conducted.
Purging is done after each experiment, roughly 2-to-10 times per month. To purge, the company would run PE resin before disassembling the machine to clean the die, screw, and barrel manually. After reassembly, the extruder would be heated to run more resin and the cleaning process repeated if necessary.
Although this purging method was successful, it was time-consuming and extremely difficult. In addition, the calculated cost-per-purge was C$77.77 based on material costs and downtime.
Solution:
Use Dyna-Purge F, a grade engineered to purge single-layer film from extrusion equipment operating anywhere from 160°C to 215°C (320°F to 420°F).
Results:
- Since Dyna-Purge cleans thoroughly on the first pass, it eliminated the need to disassemble the extruder and manually clean all of the components.
- Polymer Engineering Company Ltd. is now able to process continuous runs of different resins without the time and effort previously required to purge.
- Saving downtime and materials, the average cost-per-purge using Dyna-Purge is only C$19.24 - a 75% improvement.
