Situation:

Time is money, and you can never recover lost time. No one knows this better than Pro Mold, Inc. That’s because the Riverside, California-based company was experiencing excessive downtime each time they purged their injection molding machine. The company reported that up to 12 times a week, they would have a material or color change and the machine would be down for 85 minutes, costing Pro Mold about $130 per purge.

Downtime and cost were not the only problems with Pro Mold’s purging program. The company experienced consistent bleeding of the previous color when changing from black, blue or red acetal to white or natural acetal. Looking for an answer to their purging problems, Pro Mold turned to Dyna-Purge.

Pro Mold tested Dyna-Purge M on a DIMA injection molding machine with a 1.77-inch screw. The mold tested was a cold runner and the resin was an acetal. The barrel temperature was set at 340° F to 430° F (171° C to 221° C).

Solution:

Dyna-Purge M, a versatile grade designed to purge cold-runner injection molding systems for a wide range of resins at 350°F to 600°F (177°C to 315°C).

Results:

• Dyna-Purge M proved to be an efficient, cost-effective purging compound that eliminated color bleed.
• Color and resin changeovers were completed with just 5lbs. of Dyna-Purge M.
• Pro Mold's former scrap rate of 4-6% fell to 1-2% after using Dyna-Purge M.
• Changeover time went from 85 minutes to 30 minutes, a 65% improvement.
• Cost-to-purge showed a 61% improvement, with savings of$79 for each purge, an annual savings of over $36,000.
