Situation:
Auto Dealer Designs, headquartered in Akron, OH, specializes in customized automobile license frames and other advertising specialties. A family owned and operated business, they run 4 different Toyo and Van Dorn injection molding machines. All the machines are conventional with each screw 3 inches in diameter. The production resin is polystyrene with a melt flow of 10 to 16 and processing temperatures are 360° F to 460° F (182° C to 238° C).
Purging once a week for color changes, the company reported that they were using a chemical purging compound. The cost of the chemical purging compound was $6.25 per lb. and when both labor and machine time were added the total cost per purge was $46.10.
The operators reported when changing over approximately once a week to Blue PS from ABS they were experiencing excessive streaking, with the time to purge averaging approximately 30 minutes. A decision was made to sample Dyna-Purge M, a mechanical, non-abrasive purging compound used for a wide variety of resins with processing temperatures ranging from 350° F to 600° F (177° C to 315° C).
Solution:
Dyna-Purge M proved superior to the chemical purging compound for the following reasons:
- No soaking required
- No temperature adjustments
- Easier to work with
- More cost effective
Results:
- Lowered the purging cost 47% to only $24.62 per purge.
- Reduced the purging time to only 15 minutes, an improvement of 50%
