Situation:

Tecnopak S.A. de C.V., Mexico City, Mexico is a provider of packaging solutions (films and equipment) for the food, beverage, pharmaceutical, personal care and automotive industries. The packaging films, shrink and stretch, that they supply must be strong, flexible and clear so that the product contained in the package is visible by the consumer.

Tecnopak operates blown film extruders with 30 cm rotary dies, processing LDPE, LLDPE and HDPE. Production would often be interrupted because the film contained black specks and resin flow lines which indicated layer build-up on the screw and the die. When this occurred, Tecnopak would purge with LLDPE until an acceptable level of quality was produced.

Solution:

Tecnopak consulted with Recubrimientos Plasticos, S.A. de C.V. to find a Dyna-Purge grade that would help them reduce the amount of scrap and downtime when purging was needed. Tecnopak tested Dyna-Purge SF, a specialized thermoplastic compound designed to purge resins processed in single and multi-layer film extrusion equipment with processing temperatures from 160° C to 302° C ( 320° F to 575° F) . Recubrimientos Plasticos (www.masterbatch. com), with 3 locations in Mexico; Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterey, is the authorized distributor of Dyna-Purge in Mexico.

Results:

  • Using Dyna-Purge SF, Tecnopak realized significant savings in amount of purge required and downtime.
  • 5 kgs of Dyna-Purge SF eliminated black specks and flow lines.
