Case Study Describes How an Extruder Cut Downtime by 50% and Purging Costs by 25% Using Dyna-Purge^® Purging Compounds for Color Changes

(February 2005) – An extruder producing disposable polystyrene plastic lids in a variety of colours reduced its downtime by 90% and lowered its purging costs by 25% by switching from a liquid purging agent to Dyna-Purge^® thermoplastic purging compounds to purge 10 lines of extrusion equipment, according to a report published by Shuman Plastics, Inc., Buffalo, New York, manufacturer of the Dyna-Purge^® line of purging compounds.

Amhil Enterprises, Ltd., Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, was using a liquid purging agent to purge during color changes from dark to natural or white, and during low amps in an extruder when plastic lumps would stick in the screw (bridging). The liquid purging agent previously used required approximately one hour for mixing, activating and completing the purging process, at an average cost-per-purge of C$178.00, the case study states. After switching to Dyna-Purge, the average cost-per-purge dropped to C$133.25, a 25% decrease, and purging time took only 30 minutes, a 50% reduction. In addition, as reported by Sukhdev Brar, Process Supervisor for Amhil Enterprises, machine operators noted that Dyna-Purge cleaned the extrusion equipment more thoroughly than the liquid purging agent.

Dyna-Purge X, which the report states Amhil Enterprises uses, is one of ten formulations in the line of Dyna-Purge non-chemical, non-abrasive purging compounds. Dyna-Purge X is a grade specifically designed for purging a wide range of resins from the barrel and screw of profile and sheet extrusion equipment at 320°F to 575°F (160°C to 302°C), according to Dyna-Purge.
