New Case Study Reports How Blown Film Extruder Cut Scrap by 80% and Reduced Downtime by 50% by Purging with Dyna-Purge®

(JUNE 2007) – Plásticos Hidrosolubles, Rafelbunol, Valencia, Spain cut its scrap rate by 80% and reduced purging downtime by 50% after switching to Dyna-Purge®, according to a new report published by Shuman Plastics, Inc., manufacturer of the Dyna-PurgeŽ line of engineered purging compounds.

Operating a blown film extruder with a 60mm screw, Plásticos Hidrosolubles produces water-soluble plastic film and converts it into packaging for hospital laundry bags, prepackaged automatic washing machine detergents, agricultural fertilizers and chemicals, and industrial chemicals. The case study states that Plásticos Hidrosolubles would use 5-to-6 kg (11-to-13 lbs.) of polyethylene to purge, taking at least three or four hours to change materials or colors and wasting a significant amount of material until an acceptable level of quality was achieved.

As reported in the Case Study, David Navarro of Comercial Química Massó, authorized distributor of Dyna-Purge in Spain, tested Dyna-Purge F at Plásticos Hidrosolubles. Dyna-Purge F is a specialized thermoplastic purging compound designed to purge single-layer film from extrusion equipment at processing temperatures from 160°C to 215°C (320°F to 420°F). The grade is one of 10 formulations in the line of Dyna-Purge non-chemical, non-abrasive purging compounds.

According to the Plásticos Hidrosolubles Case Study, purging is faster and more effective, as the screw is cleaner, and scrap rates have been cut by 80%. In addition, downtime for purging has been reduced by approximately 50%.
