Colour Concentrate Compounder Reduces Purging Downtime by 88% Using Dyna-Purge® Engineered Purging Compounds

(DECEMBER 2006) – Hampton Colours, Ltd., Brimscombe, Stroud, England manufactures universal and polymer specific masterbatches including unique colours for specialized engineering polymers. According to a new report published by Shuman Plastics, Inc., manufacturer of the Dyna-Purge® line of engineered purging compounds, Hampton Colours reduced purging downtime by 88% after switching to Dyna-Purge instead of using its own purge formulation and virgin polymer to purge.

In the example cited by the case study, it would take at least 40 minutes for Hampton Colours to purge Nylon 12 based black dye masterbatch (processed at 270°C) from one of its twin-screw compounding extruders. Part of the labour-intensive job included removing the plug from the die head, but this often left sticky residues on the internal surfaces.

Upon consultation with Peter Parsbo of P.A.P. Sales, Ltd., authorized distributor of Dyna-Purge in the U.K., Reg Cairns of Hampton Colours tested Dyna-Purge E, a specialized thermoplastic purging compound designed to purge engineering resins from the barrel and screw of plastics processing machinery, the report states. Dyna-Purge E is one of 10 formulations in the line of Dyna-Purge non-chemical, non-abrasive purging compounds.

According to the case study, it now takes only five minutes and 2 kg of Dyna-Purge E to clean the screw and barrel, a reduction in purging downtime of 88%. In addition, the composition of the purging compound enables Hampton Colours to remove the plug without leaving residual polymer in the die head.
