Short-Run Molder Cuts Purging Downtime 83% and Lowers Purging Costs 46% Using Dyna-Purge® for Color and Material Changes

(JUNE 2007) – A plastics processor of injection-molded and blow-molded parts lowered its purging costs by 46% and reduced purging downtime by 83% after switching to Dyna-Purge®, according to a new report published by Shuman Plastics, Inc., manufacturer of the Dyna-PurgeŽ line of engineered purging compounds.

Operating in a fast-paced, short-run environment, Cy Plastics Works, Inc., Honeoye, New York produces parts for the automotive, medical, business machine, and sporting equipment industries. Purging several times daily to change colors and materials the company was using virgin or natural regrind polypropylene. The report states that the most difficult challenge was changing from a black TPE to natural HDPE in a blow molding application, a task that required pulling the head tooling for cleaning and purging the barrel. This consumed 65 lbs. of in-house purging material and took four hours at a calculated cost per purge of $321.00.

The case study says that Cy Plastics Works tested Dyna-Purge B, a grade specifically designed to purge a wide range of resins from the barrel, screw, and head tooling of blow molding machinery at processing temperatures from 320°F to 575°F (160°C to 302°C). Dyna-Purge B is one of 10 formulations of Dyna-Purge engineered purging compounds.

As a result, Cy Plastics Works reported eliminating streaking in 40 minutes, a reduction in downtime of 83%, and lowered its cost to purge by 46%. In addition, removing the head tooling for cleaning is no longer necessary because Dyna-Purge B cleans on the first pass. Compared to using 65 lbs. of virgin material to purge, only 35 lbs. of Dyna-Purge B is now used.
