Suggested Shutdown and Start-up Procedures

Extruder
See Dyna-Purge used in a glass-windowed extruder as it purges out Green HDPE.

Dyna–Purge is a heat stable, non-chemical, non–abrasive "engineered" thermoplastic purging compound that can be used safely for shutdown and start-up to eliminate black specking and color contamination that commonly occurs.

Shutdown

  1. Maintain temperature/RPM settings for resident resin.
  2. If applicable, retract nozzle away from mold, leaving ample room for purge to exit nozzle.
  3. Thoroughly clean the hopper.
  4. Empty barrel and starve the screw of the resident resin.
  5. Aggressively meter Dyna-Purge, one scoop at a time, into empty hopper or side port. The actual amount used depends on the condition of the machine prior to purging.
  6. Purge continuously through the die or nozzle opening.
  7. Continue to add Dyna-Purge until the compound flushed out of the machine is clean and free of contamination.
  8. Leave a generous amount of Dyna-Purge in the barrel, making sure the feed throat is empty to prevent bridging. Reduce the temperature by lowering or turning off the heat zones of the machine. (Dyna-Purge will solidify in the machine as it approaches room temperature.)
  9. Slowly stop the screw rotation, taking care not to over torque the screw, as the purge cools.

Start-up

  1. Turn on and/or raise the temperature of the heat zones in the barrel. When the lowest temperature of the grade of Dyna-Purge you are using has been reached, begin rotating the screw slowly to avoid too much torque. The purge is very stiff, so do not rotate the screw at full RPM.
  2. Bring your temperature settings up to the profile for the next resin to be processed and empty the machine of the "shutdown" purge.
  3. If the "shutdown" purge has carbon specks or old color, meter more Dyna-Purge into the machine until the compound flushed out is clean and free of contamination.
  4. Empty the barrel and starve the screw of Dyna-Purge.
  5. Introduce the next resin to be processed into the machine. This resin will flush out any Dyna-Purge residue. Continue to run the resin until all the Dyna-Purge is flushed out.
